Hosted by PASA (Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture) and Fair Food, a Philadelphia non-profit dedicated to sustainable agriculture, the event brings two things that Bucks County is great at – fresh, local ingredients and creative chefs, together for a day of food sampling and awesome workshops. We’ve given a run down of some of the fun things to expect here: 2015 Philly Farm & Food Fest.

6 things you gotta do in Bucks this weekend (Oct 30-Nov 1)

On Hallows eve, the town will be bustling,
While leaves overhead in trees start rustling
There’s goblins, ghosts, grim reapers galore,
and, a Halloween in Bucks County that will make you want more.

With happy hours, beer tasting, dinners and drinks to make you feel merry,
There’s no reason to stay home during a weekend so fun (and so scary)!

1. No Place Like Home Yappy Hour

Fri, Oct. 30, 5-10 pm, 600 Rockhill Dr, Bensalem, PA

A happy hour with adoptable pups seems like any animal lover’s dream come true. If you join the Women’s Humane Society for a Wizard of Oz “Yappy Hour,” on October 30, from 5-10 pm, you can experience just that. It will be a night of food and drink specials, meet and greet with the pups, and you can come dressed in your best “Wizard of Oz” inspired costumes. Dance the night away with a guest DJ and have a blast, while supporting a good cause of homeless and needy animals in the community.

Yappy Hour vouchers will be available for purchase prior to the event, which can be used for either a complimentary drink (beer, wine, or martini) or appetizer of your choosing. During the event, guests can make a donation of any amount towards the Women’s Humane Society’s animals and they’ll receive 25% off of their entire bill for the night as a “thank you” for their support.

2. Eat, Drink and Be Scary

Fri, Oct. 30, 7-10 pm, Crossing Vineyards and Winery, 1853 Wrightstown Road, Newtown PA

Halloween

Halloween is not just for the kids. An adult-only evening of wine tasting, fortune telling and sweet treats is happening from 7-10 pm on Friday, October 30 at Crossing Vineyards and WineryThere will be tarot card or palm readings, and you can put on your best costume for the chance to win a prize. Reservation is necessary and additional wine is available for purchase. It’s $40 per person, so call 215.493.6500, ext. 19 or buy here.

3. Spicewine Sale at Peace Valley Winery

Adults need to have a special treat during Halloween too. Don your best costume this Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 1, at the Peace Valley Winery. Their Spicewine and Spiced Apple Wine will be on sale for 10% off. The wines can be served warm for a Halloween party. If you wear your costume on Saturday, October 31, you will receive an additional 10% off your wine purchase. Their Dark Overlord (Rob) will determine if you are in costume. It’s best you impress him (depending on how badly you want your wine).

5. Candy Apple Workshop

Sat, Oct. 31, 10 am-12 pm, Cairnwood Estate, 1005 Cathedral Road, Bryn Athyn PA

candy apple

We know this isn’t Bucks County, but it’s right over the border in Montgomery County — and it’s too sweet to pass up!

Come to Cairnwood Estate in Bryn Athyn, on Saturday, October 31, for a family-friendly candy apple workshop. The workshop is from 10 am to 12 pm. Some of the activities include making a gourmet candy apple with assorted toppings, dressing up in Victiorian era clothing for an old-time photograph, and enjoying spiced cider and s’mores. The event is free and the workshop is $5 per person. The 5×7 keepsake photos are $15 each, additional copies are $5 a photo. Wear a Halloween costume for a special prize!

6. Beer Tasting: Pumpkin Beer

Sun, Nov. 1, 5 pm, Washington House Restaurant, 136 N. Main Street, Sellersville PA

Pumpkin Beer

Another Halloween event just for the adults! Come to the Washington House on Sunday, November 1 for a pumpkin beer tasting. It starts at 5 pm so you’ll have plenty of time to try them all. You might have been to the Washington House before for flights of wine, but the beer is great too and definitely a good way to start the new month.

It’s a week of last-minute shopping to make sure the holiday parties are ready to go. If you’re looking for additions to the party you’re hosting or maybe you just want some food for the week so you don’t have to cook, any of these places will do. It’s the busiest week for a lot of markets and shops in the area, so calling ahead could never hurt.

Food Collage

  • Pasqualina’s Italian Market and DeliCelebrate the holiday with some fine and fresh Italian food and deli items from this local market. Pasqualina’s has daily made soups, made to order hoagies, a panini of the day, as well as market items like cheese (over 90 different kinds), Bucks County Biscotti, San Marzano tomatoes and sauces, and more.
  • Peddler’s VillageFor your last-minute shopping this week, Peddler’s Village shops are open Monday through Wednesday from 10 am-9 pm, and on Christmas Eve 10 am -4 pm. Shops are closed on Christmas Day. There are items for the home, gifts from local artisans, unique toys, comfy foods and more at the Village.
  • The Market at DelValThere are great holiday deals at The Market right now. All Stonewall Kitchen items like jams, jellies, drink mixers and dressings are on sale for 20% off through December 27. All undecorated wreaths are 30% off through December 24 (while supplies left). And, since it’s getting cold (finally?) they have wood pellets. They also have daily lunch specials you can order at the counter, in case you just need a grab-and-go lunch.

  • Linden Hill GardensWreaths can add a festive touch to any house (indoors and outdoors). The wreaths at Linden Hill are crafted by hand using combinations of materials like fir, boxwood, chamaecyparis, rhododendron and juniper with berries. They also have had holiday plants, books for sale and fir candles. Call 610.847.1300 to see what’s still available.
  • The LarderTucked away in Doylestown, The Larder has unique spices and tons of candies and sweets to make any holiday complete. They have Amish goodies, chocolate covered nuts, gift baskets, seasonings, and candies that you remember from your childhood past. They have holiday hours this week which you can find here.

Spaghetti and Tomato Sauce

All you can eat, and eat, and eat: I like to think of pasta as the gift that keeps on giving. Every bite is warm and tasty, and having leftovers is the best part. Don’t worry about bringing any pasta home when there is an all-you-can-eat pasta night on our calendar. If you’ve looked but never ventured out, this week head into town so you don’t have to cook. One pasta night is from 5 – 10 pm on Tuesday, December 22 at Bell’s Tavern in Lambertville, NJ. You get meat or marinara sauce spaghetti with a garden salad, garlic bread — all for $10 per person. You can also get a bottle of wine for half price. Call 609.397.2226 for any questions. There is also an all-you-can-eat pasta or wings night at Fran’s Pub from 4:30 – 6:30 pm on Thursdays.

Nothing says game day like good BBQ and some wings. Hickory Kitchen in Doylestown is known for its barbecue, and thankfully you can bring their food to your living room couch. They have a large catering menu, with options for big or small parties. Get BBQ meats by the pound like their pulled pork or sliced brisket. Meats by the pound run from $15 – $18 depending on the meat. Don’t forget to add a tray of cornbread! You can get a half tray or a full tray (because who doesn’t want extra cornbread?). Find the full catering menu here.

At Smoke’n Dudes in Bensalem, the family owned restaurant that got their start in barbecue contests, also has a catering menu with signature sauces and rubs. Some specials for the game this weekend include 20 wings, two lbs. of pulled pork, and six rolls for $29.99; 50 wings and two racks of ribs for $65.99; or five lbs of pulled pork, 18 rolls, a tray of cole slaw and a tray of baked beans for $74.99. You can try some of their sauces if you plan on making your own meat, and they have four flavors: Original, Tennessee Red, Smokey Mountain, and Honey Mustard. You can even stop in and pick up cuts of meat like petite filets, rib eye, hamburger, and more.

6. Ducks and Chickens?

January – February, The Market at Delval, 2100 Lower State Rd, Doylestown, PA

Chicks
Did you decide to try a new hobby this year as part of your resolutions’ list? The Market at DelVal in Doylestown wants you to raise ducks and chickens! That’s right. You can have your own eggs in the morning by these selected breeds of chickens and ducks suitable for the average person to raise. Now that’s eating local! Experts at The Market will be able to help, and they are taking orders from now through February. The chicks will be ready for pick up in March and April, and they require a 50% deposit to order. Here is the order form, and call 215.230.7171 for questions.

Have a great weekend!

cold groundhog snow_304x267The groundhog might have said that winter is on its way out, but we are feeling anything but spring outside. With the bitter cold, it’s easy to feel the February doldrums. But there are lots of things happening this week to keep you upbeat, warm and happy.

There will be a free dinner at the Presbyterian Church of Deep Run in Perkasie today, February 15. The church always opens its doors the third Monday of each month so the community can have home cooked meals and tasty desserts. The meal is served in Hoopes Hall from 5:30-6:30 pm. The menu this Monday is chicken casserole with rice, and homemade desserts. Note: During the winter, if Pennridge School District closes due to inclement weather, the dinner will not be held on that day. Call ahead to check: 215.249.3689.

Lobster roll, Milford Oyster House

Also tonight, lobster two ways tonight at Milford Oyster House (yes, it’s in New Jersey but it looks too good to pass up). Try the lobster salad roll in the tavern and or whole lobster served out of the shell atop a tangle of angel hair pasta with lemon butter sauce and garnished with fresh asparagus. Seems like it will warm up all the cold souls on both sides of the river. The Milford Oyster House opens at 5 pm today.

Food, The Market at DelVal

This should cheer you up. For the entire month of February, The Market at DelVal is offering 20% off just about everything in its entire store for customers shopping after 3 pm.

The Market at DelVal, a locovore’s dream, offers locally grown foods; fresh produce; locally made jams, dressings and salsas; locally raised honey, and many other unique novelties not found anywhere else in the area. Their bakery also makes homemade goodies every day, which are my personal favorite! The discount does not apply to milk products, eggs, catered food, Pepperidge Farm products or items already discounted.

Bubbles & BBQ, Yardley Inn

Mark your calendar now! There are a few interesting and tasty events coming up next week, and what do you know, they are all on the same day: Wednesday, February 24. Better put all three in a hat to pick one because it’s going to be a hard decision:

  • Wine dinner – Jamison Publick House, Pennsburg, PA [Wed, Feb 24, 6 – 8 pm]
  • An Evening of Tastes and Tales with Jim Hamilton – Hamilton’s Grill Room, Lambertville, NJ [Wed, Feb 24, 6:30 – 9 pm]
  • Bubbles & BBQ – Yardley Inn, Yardley, PA [Wed, Feb 24, 7 – 9 pm]

Bucks Food Calendar: February 22, 2016

There’s something about living in an area where everyone really supports the local businesses and the community. Bucks County is home to so many unique shops, restaurants, wineries, chocolatiers, farms, and other places to eat. Good thing there’s always things going on during the week to keep the locals happy and satisfied!

Champagne, Pixabay

BBQ and Champagne? You’ve probably tried beer and BBQ but what about pairing southern dishes with some sparkling wine? This Wednesday, February 24, the Yardley Inn presents their Bubbles & BBQ Dinner, where you can enjoy champagne, cava and other sparkling wines, paired with five delicious courses. The dinner starts at 7 pm and is $85 per person plus tax and gratuity.

Executive Chef Eben Copple has prepared a great menu. The first course is grilled oysters, lemon oil, pickled heart of palm paired with Hacienda Methode Champenoise Sparkling. The second course will be country ham, blistered peppers, redeye mayo, sweet potato biscuit paired with Casa Del Mar Cava. The third course is New Orleans BBQ shrimp skewer, cheesy grits paired with Bellavista cuvee alma Franciacorta. The fourth course is smoked brisket, tater tots, spicy sauce paired with LeLarge Peugeot brut Tradition Champagne. And lastly the fifth course is apple-cinnamon fritters paired with Bellavista 2008 Vintage brut Rose Franciacorta. To make a reservation, call 215.493.3800.

Jamison Publick House, JPH Facebook

Wine Dinner. This Wednesday, February 24 the Jamison Publick House will host a wine dinner. The restaurant (not to be confused with the Jamison Pour House) is located just over the county line in Montgomery County (even though it isn’t Bucks, this historic hotel turned restaurant is just too good to pass up). The dinner is $80 and starts at 6 pm. Executive chef Stephen Yeager is working on an inspired menu that will pair with wines that “mean something.” The Jamison Family is presently accepting reservations for the limited number of seats available for this dinner. Call 215.375.8886.

7th locavore crop

Eating local and celebrating local businesses is what it’s all about! Come out for the 7th Annual Bucks Locavore event, on Thursday, February 25 from 5 – 8 pm. This event is a great opportunity to taste local food and network. The event began seven years ago when Superior Woodcraft in Doylestown teamed up with the Doylestown Business Community Alliance (DBCA) to raise awareness of local businesses, local farms and local foods. Over 30 local producers will be offering samples of their products, everything from moonshine to pansy marmalade to the best craft brews in the region. This is a free event open to the public. More information is available here.

Here’s just a “taste” of who will be there:

  • Doylestown Brewing Co.
  • Giggling Goat Dairy
  • Laurie’s Chocolates
  • The Market at DelVal
  • Offbeat Gourmet
  • Rose Bank Winery
  • Sole Kombucha
  • Wycombe Vineyard

Not sure what Superior Woodcraft has to do with local food? See last year’s post, 6th Annual Locavore!

Breakfast, The Karlton Cafe, Facebook
Looking to spice up your week? The Karlton Cafe in Quakertown still has their Cajun specials for the rest of February. Head to the cafe for breakfast dishes like Cajun shrimp and jalapeno cheddar grits or cornbread stuffed french toast. Try some shrimp gumbo for lunch or the blackened skirt steak for dinner. Gumbo is available for takeout in three sizes: 12 oz, 16 oz, or a quart. Make your reservation by calling 215.538.8353.

This weekend, we’ve got some typical March weather. Although it feels like spring now, the daffodils are in for a shock — it looks like we may get some snow Sunday night (yuck). But don’t let it get you down. Forge ahead.

It’s almost time for Easter which means plenty of time with the Easter Bunny, sweet treats, and other things to contribute to your spring fever. And don’t forget, this weekend two restaurant weeks will start. See which restaurants are participating and the specials they are offering in our restaurant week post here.

1. Hellebore Festival and Springfair

Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 19 – 20, 9 am – 4 pm, Jerry Fritz Linden Hill Gardens, 8230 Easton Road, Ottsville, PA

Hellebore, Jerry Fritz

This weekend is the 14th Annual Hellebore Festival and Spring Fair at Jerry Fritz Linden Hill Garden. Come celebrate everything hellebore — a flower that cures those winter blues. They are an early blooming flower, and collectors should not miss this event. New this year is the Springfair, being held on Saturday, March 19 only, featuring artisans offering gifts and treats for Easter. Candy, pottery, jewelry, along with food to eat. Enjoy a drink and meal prepared by Chestnut Hill Gourmet Foods, in Kintnersville, PA. Eat and enjoy a winter-free weekend!

2. Bunny Brunch at The Market at DelVal

Saturday, Mar. 19, 9 am, The Market at DelVal, 2100 Lower State Rd., Doylestown, PA

Cost is $15 per person. The morning starts with cooked breakfast at The Market, including scrambled eggs, an omelet station, bacon, sausage, french toast, potatoes, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and more. The Easter egg hunt will follow. Reservations for brunch are required. Call 215.230.7170. For more information on the egg hunt, see the website for details.

They are having a bake sale with a large variety of fun treats. Most will be wrapped for giving as gifts, and they are perfect to put in Easter baskets. They will also have raffle baskets from some of your favorite businesses.

4. Eat and Meet Meals

Breakfast – Sunday, Mar. 20, Perkasie Fire Co., 100 N. Fifth St, Perkasie, PA

Riegelsville Fire Company breakfast

Some people call them “community meals;” I call them a chance to eat some good food and meet new people. This weekend we’ve got a few options. The Riegelsville Fire Company, which will do their monthly breakfast this Sunday, also has a weekly Fish Fry on the Fridays leading up to Easter. All proceeds benefit the firefighting program of Community Fire Company #1, Station 42. Call 610.749.2737 for any questions.

The Perkasie Fire Co. serves up their breakfast this Sunday too. Come for eggs, pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrapple, home fries, and more. Cost: Adults ($7), Children (Ages 4-12)($3.50) and kids under three eat for free. Once again, all proceeds benefit the firehouse. For more information email perkasiefireco.breakfast@gmail.com.

5. Caffé Galleria Gives Back

Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 19 – 20, Caffé Galleria, 23 North Union Street, Lambertville, NJ

Caffe Galleria, Omelette

This weekend on the other side of the river, celebrate the spirit of a true community member. Caffé Galleria in Lambertville is the legacy of founder Dawn Raia, who passed away from cancer in March 2014. This weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, March 19 – 20, two events are happening to celebrate Dawn’s life.

On Saturday, the Lambertville Animal Welfare and Animal Alliance will have dogs and cats available to adopt at the cafe.

On Sunday, there will be live music from 11 am – 3:30 pm. John Beacher and Gregg Cagno will perform. Wait, what about the food? You really need to try out the brunch menu, which uses fresh and health conscious recipes. Try the lentil burger, or a breakfast flat bread. Pick your own egg scramble with farm fresh eggs, or order a homemade omelet.

6. Learn how to make Hamentashen

Sunday, Mar. 20, McCaffrey’s Supermarket, 635 Heacock Rd, Yardley, PA 19067

Learn how to make hamentashen_crop

Easter is not the only holiday coming up. The Jewish holiday, Purim, is March 24. To celebrate it properly one must eat a special, delicious cookie called a hamentash (literally the “hat of Hamen” who is the villain in the Purim story). Want to learn how to make hamentashen? The Lubavitch of Bucks County is offering a workshop on this Sunday at McCaffrey’s Supermarket in Yardley in the upstairs dining room. Fun for kids and adults.

Yum! Time to eat!You can also learn how to make hamentashen step-by-step in our post, Time for Hamentashen!

Have a great weekend!

The Market at DelValWhat a great fall this is turning out to be! The forecast looks great for The Market at DelVal’s last fall fun days. The Market has been full of fall spirit this month, and it doesn’t show signs of stopping yet, especially this weekend.

Fall Fun days include a day down on the farm, with wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, pumpkin picking, inflatable attractions, a giant corn maze, and lots of other family fall fun. Plus, you’re definitely going to get hungry with all the activities, so you might as well stop into the Market for some fresh made sandwiches, salads, and Uncle Dave’s pumpkin ice cream.

That was a gorgeous weekend, and it’s only going to get better! Finally, a few days with endless sun and summer breezes. And we’re not just talking about the weather.

There’s a lot happening this week in Bucks County, especially if you like sweets and spirits. Pick up some cinnamon buns, swing by a carnival, or check out a new summer menu.

New summer menu. The season’s changing, and so are the menus at Bowman’s Tavern. Their summer menu offers plenty of options with seasonal and fresh ingredients. Sample dishes like crispy pork belly, house roasted porchetta, crab cake sandwiches, all served with summer vegetables and more.Bowman's North; photo Lynne Goldman

If you love Bowman’s Tavern, you’ll probably love Bowman’s North of Riegelsville, too. Come enjoy a unique day on Monday, July 3, as the Bucks County Taste Dinner Club community experiences “both” Bowman’s in one fun mini summer road trip. Only 7 spots left! Come spend a fun afternoon with friends, old and new. More details here.

ice cream from Shady Brook Farm

Milkshake Mondays. Hot days are here, and that means ice cream. Uncle Dave’s Homemade Ice Cream down at Shady Brook Farm and DelVal Creamery will feature different specials from Monday through Thursday throughout the summer. Cool off with a sweet treat all week-long! Also, Mondays are $4 milkshakes from noon to 6 pm. This special will end on August 14.

Cinnamon bun bake sale. Picture this: a warm, gooey cinnamon bun next to a piping hot cup of coffee (or tea). This could be your breakfast if you stop by the Central Bucks Senior Center to pick up some of their fresh-baked cinnamon buns, handmade by the members of the center.

You can enjoy the buns plain, with raisins or nuts, or both. Learn more about the sale here or call the center for more information. Save some for the weekend, or eat them all as soon as you get home!

Perkasie Fire Company Carnival. The Carnival has come to town in Perkasie, beginning June 27 and ending on July 1. Come join in the family fun with rides, games, and everyone’s favorite, carnival food. Who doesn’t have fond memories of bumper cars and funnel cake? All proceeds benefit the fire company, and the venue is at Lake Lenape Park in Perkasie.

Call up the Spirits. Grab some friends and get ready for some “spirited” fun. This Tuesday, June 27, the Logan Inn in New Hope is welcoming back the author and spiritual medium, Edward Tabbitas, for another round of dinners and spirit readings.

The evening includes a three-course dinner followed by a group reading for $80 per person. The price includes a welcome cocktail, hors d’oeuvres, three-course dinner, and a group reading with Tabbitas (and free parking!). Price does not include alcohol, tax and gratuity. Stay packages are available too. The dinners run the last Tuesday of each month through September 26, and October 24 – 31.
